KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings run October 12–18 in Bangkok. The IMF's World Economic Outlook press briefing is set for 09:00 Bangkok time on Tuesday, October 13 (10:00 p.m. ET Monday). The Global Financial Stability Report briefing follows at 10:15 (IMF Annual Meetings schedule).
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the September Consumer Price Index at 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 14 (BLS CPI). The Federal Reserve releases the Beige Book at 2:00 p.m. the same day (Federal Reserve Board October calendar).
  • Thursday, October 15 brings two U.S. releases at 8:30 a.m. ET: the Producer Price Index (BLS October schedule) and September advance retail sales from the Census Bureau (Census retail release schedule).
  • Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh holds a conversation with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva at 11:30 p.m. ET Thursday — 10:30 a.m. Friday in Bangkok (Federal Reserve Board; IMF).
  • The IMF's African Department briefs at 16:30 Bangkok time on Thursday — 10:30 a.m. Lagos, 11:30 a.m. Johannesburg, 12:30 p.m. Nairobi (IMF Annual Meetings schedule).
  • Black families enter the week from a weaker balance-sheet base. The Fed's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances puts Black non-Hispanic median net worth at $36,800, down 25% from 2022 (Federal Reserve Board — October 9, 2026).

IMF Publishes World Economic Outlook In Bangkok As BLS Releases September Consumer Price Index

THE LEDGER

The week is a two-city stress test. Bangkok hosts the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings from October 12 to 18. Washington publishes the U.S. inflation and spending numbers that move the dollar (IMF; Federal Reserve Board calendar).

The IMF's World Economic Outlook lands overnight Monday in U.S. time. The Global Financial Stability Report follows within the hour, and the Fiscal Monitor comes the next morning in Bangkok (IMF schedule).

Wednesday morning brings September CPI at 8:30 a.m. ET, and the Fed's Beige Book follows at 2:00 p.m. (BLS; Federal Reserve Board).

Policymakers will not be quiet. Fed Governor Christopher Waller, Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman and Chairman Kevin Warsh all appear this week (Federal Reserve Board).

ECB President Christine Lagarde (ECB weekly schedule) and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, Megan Greene and Huw Pill (Bank of England upcoming events) are also on the calendar.

Most of them speak in Bangkok, often in the middle of the U.S. night. A remark at 3:00 a.m. London time can reprice gilts before the UK open, and a Warsh comment at 11:30 p.m. ET Thursday can set the dollar's tone for Friday's industrial-production release.

Africa and the Caribbean get their own slots inside that window. The IMF's African Department briefs Thursday and the Western Hemisphere Department briefs Friday (IMF schedule).

Meanwhile, Nigeria's largest fintech is in SEC registration for a New York listing (OPay F-1, SEC EDGAR — October 9, 2026).

Kenya's Treasury runs its weekly bill auction Thursday (Central Bank of Kenya).

Operators should read this as a single week: global outlook, U.S. inflation and regional funding all reprice together.

GLOBAL WATCH

Federal Reserve

What's scheduled

Monday is Columbus Day. Statistical releases that would normally publish Monday move to Tuesday, October 13 (Federal Reserve Board).

The week's Fed appearances, in Eastern Time:

  • Waller: discussion on AI at 3:45 a.m. ET Tuesday in New Delhi.
  • Bowman: discussion on supervision and regulation at 5:40 a.m. ET Wednesday at the Institute of International Finance summit in Bangkok, then a speech at 10:55 p.m. ET Wednesday at the Bangkok Economic Festival.
  • Warsh: conversation with Georgieva at 11:30 p.m. ET Thursday.

The Beige Book publishes at 2:00 p.m. ET Wednesday, and G.17 industrial production and capacity utilization at 9:15 a.m. ET Friday (Federal Reserve Board).

Market setup

The Fed walks into this week with a split committee. Waller said on October 8 that 16 of 18 participants projected at least one more hike in 2026 (Federal Reserve Board — October 8, 2026).

CPI lands Wednesday morning and the Beige Book's district reports follow that afternoon. Warsh then speaks on an international stage hours after Thursday's PPI and retail sales prints.

Why It Matters

Rate-hike expectations flow straight into floating-rate credit lines, SBA-linked loans and the warehouse lines that fund community lenders. A hot CPI followed by a hawkish Warsh conversation would leave no market session to digest before Friday's industrial-production print.

European Central Bank

What's scheduled

Lagarde participates in the Bangkok Annual Meetings Tuesday through Thursday. Her listed appearances are a CNN conversation at 04:10 CET Wednesday and an Atlantic Council fireside chat at 10:30 CET Wednesday.

She also joins the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' meeting on Thursday (ECB weekly schedule). Other ECB appearances:

  • Philip Lane: speech at 20:30 CET Tuesday in Dublin.
  • Frank Elderson: keynote at the ECB–Bank of England climate-risk supervision conference at 10:00 CET Wednesday.
  • Isabel Schnabel: public lecture in Mannheim at 18:15 CET Wednesday.

Eurostat publishes final September HICP on Friday, October 16 (Eurostat).

Market setup

The euro-area flash estimate showed inflation at 3.8% in September, up from 3.2% in August (Eurostat — October 2, 2026).

The ECB's latest account showed a unanimous move to a 2.50% deposit facility rate with no commitment to further moves (ECB — October 8, 2026).

Why It Matters

Euro-denominated debt, trade finance and CFA-franc-linked economies take their cue from the ECB. A confirmed 3.8% final print keeps pressure on euro funding costs for West and Central African borrowers.

Bank of England

What's scheduled

The Bank's calendar lists these appearances:

  • Sarah Breeden: Atlantic Council interview at 10:30 a.m. BST Monday; IIF cyber-risk panel at 9:45 a.m. BST Thursday.
  • Megan Greene: Atlantic Council speech in Bangkok at 4:00 a.m. BST Tuesday; investor-seminar panel at 7:45 a.m. BST Thursday.
  • Huw Pill: Citi roundtable at 7:00 a.m. BST Wednesday; panel at 4:40 a.m. BST Thursday.
  • Andrew Bailey: IIF fireside chat in Bangkok at 3:00 a.m. BST Friday.

All are listed on the Bank of England's upcoming events page. The ONS publishes the August monthly GDP estimate at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, October 15 (ONS). The October labour-market release follows on October 20 (ONS).

Market setup

Bank of England officials speak six times before GDP prints. Pill and Greene both appear in the hours just before or after the ONS release window.

Why It Matters

UK diaspora founders who borrow against gilt-linked rates face pricing that can move overnight on Bangkok remarks. Thursday's 7:00 a.m. GDP release is the hard data point to anchor to.

AFRICA MARKETS

Nigeria

Policy calendar

The National Bureau of Statistics has not posted a release date for September CPI on its homepage. Its latest headline reading is 15.39% on the rebased (2024 = 100) index (National Bureau of Statistics).

OPay, which drew 89.5% of its first-half 2026 revenue from Nigeria, is in SEC registration for a New York Stock Exchange listing under "OPAY" (OPay F-1 — October 9, 2026).

Market posture

OPay's F-1 leaves the ADS count and price range blank. Standard Bank's Stanbic Africa has agreed to buy up to US$200 million of shares in a concurrent private placement (OPay F-1).

Why It Matters

An amended F-1 with a price range would give investors a public U.S. valuation marker for a Nigerian consumer-finance business. September CPI is the domestic print that sets naira real rates.

South Africa

Policy calendar

Stats SA publishes Mining: Production and sales for August on Tuesday, October 13; the July edition was released at 11:30 (Stats SA).

Export and import unit value indices follow on October 15 (Stats SA).

Two larger releases come the following week: September CPI at 10:00 on Wednesday, October 21 (Stats SA) and August retail trade sales at 13:00 the same day (Stats SA).

Market posture

Stats SA's August economic wrap-up reported mining production down 2.7%, led by platinum group metals (Stats SA).

Why It Matters

Mining output drives rand export receipts. Tuesday's print and the IMF African Department briefing at 11:30 a.m. Johannesburg time Thursday come within 48 hours of each other.

Kenya

Policy calendar

The Central Bank of Kenya offers 91-day, 182-day and 364-day Treasury bills at auction on Thursday, October 15, value-dated October 19.

The previous 91-day average rate was 8.7615% (Central Bank of Kenya).

Market posture

The CBK held the Central Bank Rate at 8.75% on October 7. It reported the gross non-performing loan ratio at 13.9% and reserves at US$14,702 million, or 5.9 months of import cover (Central Bank of Kenya — October 7, 2026).

Why It Matters

The 91-day rate is now just above the policy rate. Thursday's auction shows whether short-term government paper stays anchored after the hold.

Ghana

Policy calendar

Ghana's Ministry of Finance publishes its investor presentations on its investor-relations page, including the 2026 Mid-Year Investor Presentation from August (Ministry of Finance, Ghana).

The IMF's African Department briefing falls at 09:30 GMT Thursday, which is Accra time (IMF schedule).

Market posture

Ghana's ministry lists its IMF program history, anchored by the US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility, on its IMF update page (Ministry of Finance, Ghana).

Why It Matters

Bangkok is the first Annual Meetings since the ministry's August mid-year presentation.

Investor-facing statements from the IMF briefing set the reference points for Ghana's next market access.

DOMESTIC MARKETS (BLACK AMERICA)

Dollar funding & small-business squeeze

Wednesday's CPI and Thursday's PPI set the inflation path the Fed debates next (BLS).

The Fed's H.8 report on assets and liabilities of commercial banks publishes at 4:15 p.m. ET Friday (Federal Reserve Board).

The Survey of Consumer Finances shows the share of families with debt payments above 40% of income rose to 8.6% from 6.5%, a level last seen in 2013 (Federal Reserve Board — October 9, 2026).

Why It Matters

Rising debt-service burdens reach Black-owned businesses through owners' personal guarantees and household credit lines.

Workforce dynamics & household demand

BLS publishes Real Earnings for September at 8:30 a.m. ET Wednesday, alongside CPI (BLS). Census publishes September advance retail sales at 8:30 a.m. ET Thursday (Census).

The University of Michigan's preliminary October sentiment index fell to 46.3, and year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7% (University of Michigan — October 9, 2026).

The survey's commentary said sentiment among lower-income consumers "dropped steeply this month" (University of Michigan).

Why It Matters

Real earnings and retail sales measure whether households are keeping pace with prices. Black families' median income fell 2% to $49,400 in the 2025 survey (Federal Reserve Board).

Real estate & community development finance

The 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances puts the homeownership rate at 66%, about unchanged from 2022. Median net housing value rose to $230,000 from $218,900 (Federal Reserve Board — October 9, 2026).

Black non-Hispanic median net worth fell 25% to $36,800, and the White–Black median wealth ratio reached nine to one, the widest since 2016 (Federal Reserve Board).

Why It Matters

Community development lenders price against the same Treasury curve that CPI moves on Wednesday. Borrowers with thinner wealth buffers feel those moves first.

LATIN AMERICA & CARIBBEAN

Latin America: the IMF regional briefing sets the baseline

The IMF's Western Hemisphere Department press briefing is set for 11:00 Bangkok time on Friday, October 16 — midnight ET going into Friday.

A Governor Talks session titled "Venezuela Redux: From Crisis Management to Restoring Hope" runs at 15:00 Bangkok time on Wednesday (IMF schedule).

Why It Matters

The regional briefing updates growth and inflation assumptions that exporters, nearshoring suppliers and diaspora investors use for pricing.

Caribbean: development finance drives procurement

The IMF Executive Board's Article IV review estimates Guyana's real GDP grew 19.3% in 2025 and projects 22.3% for 2026 (IMF — October 8, 2026). The Bank of Jamaica raised its policy rate by 0.50 points to 6.00% on September 28; its next announcement is November 18 (Bank of Jamaica).

The IMF's Analytical Corner session "Mind the Gaps: Caribbean Trade Patterns and the Connectivity Constraints" runs at 15:30 Bangkok time on Tuesday (IMF schedule).

Why It Matters

Guyana's growth is driving public procurement.

Jamaica's tighter policy rate raises the cost of local working capital, and the IMF's trade-connectivity work points to where regional logistics spending is likely to go.

  2. Monitor Bangkok overnight. The WEO briefing comes at 10:00 p.m. ET Monday and Warsh speaks at 11:30 p.m. ET Thursday. Set alerts rather than waiting for the U.S. open (IMF).
  3. Benchmark Kenya and South Africa exposure against Thursday's tape. The CBK bill auction and the IMF African Department briefing both land Thursday (Central Bank of Kenya; IMF).
  4. Track OPay's amended F-1 for a price range. That filing is the first public valuation marker for the transaction (SEC EDGAR).
  5. Stress-test household-linked credit. The Fed survey shows 8.6% of families with debt payments above 40% of income. Review personal guarantees and owner credit lines before retail sales print Thursday (Federal Reserve Board).
