How the floor of 145 is counted: 99 NCES-recognised HBCUs (open and accredited, fall 2022) + 7 South African historically Black universities + 31 California Black-Serving Institutions (December 2025 cohort) + 3 Afro-descendant-serving institutions in Latin America + The Mico University College + Fourah Bay College + 3 flagship Black-majority national universities individually verified this release (Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya) = 145. Category 4 — national university systems across sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean — is not bulk-estimated from regional totals (roughly 1,000+ institutions by continental estimates); each entry is added only once individually source-verified. Counts move: the U.S. Department of Education designates 107 HBCUs rather than 99, and the NCES figure is a fall 2022 snapshot. Every named alumnus carries the source it was checked against; records marked awaiting research or not individually verified are listed but no claim beyond the cited source is made about them.
